Susan Kawa
Susan Kawa, an artisan dedicated to the timeless craft of Nantucket Lightship Baskets, creates heirloom-quality purses, baskets, miniatures, and more from her home in Indialantic, Florida. Married on Nantucket and a lifelong admirer of the island’s rich history and lightship basket culture, Susan’s journey into basketmaking grew through a blend of inspiration and grit.
Largely self-taught, she has mastered a craft that requires patience, skill, and an exacting eye. A properly crafted Nantucket basket, so they say, will last for generations, aging from a warm straw hue to a deep, rich brown patina: “Nantucket inspired, I am strong and stout, don’t lose or burn me, I’ll never wear out.” Using cherry, oak, maple, and walnut hardwoods, with accents of brass, bone, and fossilized ivory, Susan creates pieces that honor traditional Nantucket styles while also exploring modern interpretations.
Each basket is a testament to her meticulous craftsmanship and her deep respect for the enduring beauty of the art form. In addition to maintaining a selection of baskets for sale and selectively accepting commissions, Susan teaches Nantucket basketry seasonally, sharing her passion and skill with others who wish to continue this timeless tradition.
