Intermediate–Advanced Drawing: Seeing, Structure, and Surface
Deepen your observational skills and refine your technical control in this intermediate to advanced drawing class with HCA watercolor artist Linda Neal. Building on foundational concepts such as Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, the Grid Method, and Relationship Drawing, this course moves beyond seeing correctly to interpreting form with confidence, precision, and intention.
Through a series of focused, progressively challenging exercises, you will work toward greater accuracy, expressive line quality, and nuanced value control. Students will practice translating three-dimensional form onto a two-dimensional surface with attention to proportion, spatial relationships, and subtle shifts in light and shadow.
Key areas of focus include:
Advanced sighting and measuring techniques for complex proportions and foreshortening
Structural drawing — understanding underlying form before surface detail
Value modeling and light logic to create convincing volume and depth
Refined texture techniques using graphite to suggest different surfaces (smooth, rough, reflective, organic)
Edge control — learning when to soften, sharpen, or lose edges for realism and atmosphere
Compositional decision-making — framing, cropping, and emphasis within the picture plane
This class emphasizes sustained observation, patience, and disciplined practice while still maintaining a supportive and collegial studio atmosphere. Linda offers individualized feedback tailored to your skill level, helping you strengthen your visual reasoning and drawing vocabulary.
Materials
Students will continue to work with accessible, portable drawing tools:
Range of Value graphite pencils (Koh-I-Noor or Derwent recommended)
Kneaded eraser
Pencil sharpener
11” × 14” Newsprint Sketch Pad
11” × 14” Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper
Proportional divider
Kleenex or small piece of chamois (about 5” square)
